Library philosophy

The School Library offers access to information and ideas to support intellectual enquiry. Individuality is respected and a questioning, independent approach to learning is encouraged. The Library provides a suitable environment for the acquisition of knowledge, serendipity, quiet reflection and the exercise of imagination. It is accessible to all and provides an alternative to Yard, the House and the classroom. Click here to view the full Library Policy document.

Acceptable use of the Library

Bags may only be taken into the entrance area and Milne Room. There are bag racks in the entrance area for your use.

Discussion is permitted in the entrance area, Milne and Brock Rooms but it should not be so loud as to be heard in rooms further away.

The Scott and Greene Rooms are reserved for those who wish to work silently.

All other rooms in the Library should be quiet but please note that group discussions are sometimes carried out in Christie, and the table in the Carleton Gallery is often used as a focus for two or three people to work together.

Food and drink are not for consumption in the Library and will be confiscated. Water may be drunk beside the water cooler.

Personal listening devices must not be heard by others.

Mobile telephones are to be switched off. Do not use mobiles anywhere within the Library. If you need to take a call, make sure your phone is on silent mode and take it out of the Library to answer.

Periodicals should be read in the area provided and, if removed for any reason, should be returned.

Acceptable use of the computers

The Library is primarily an information provider. It supports the curriculum in the school and the use of the computers in the Library must fit within this general parameter. Please read the full Acceptable use policy for computers in the library in conjunction with the whole school's Acceptable Use for Computer Network policy. Failure to follow these rules will result in you not being able to use the Library computers at all.

All use of computers must be work-directed. The assumption underlying this term is that whatever use the computer is put to, the aim is to help with formal schoolwork, i.e. connected with lessons, or other academic activities associated with the school. There are plugs for laptop use in the carrels in Greene and Scott and there are a few laptops available for use in the Library in addition to the PCs available in Milne – ask at the issue desk.

Loans, returning items and fines

The loan period is a fortnight, three days or overnight, depending on the status of the material at any one time. Generally speaking, students may borrow up to 10 items at one time, at the discretion of Library staff.

Please return items to Library staff at the issue desk or ensure that they are put into the returns box at the right-hand side of the issue counter. Items must be returned by 5.30pm if they are to be regarded as having been returned on that day. On Saturday items should be returned by 12:30pm. Items returned during the last half hour of normal opening and during prep will be considered to have been returned the following day.

Fines for late return of items are in operation and it is in your interests to note this. Fines accrue at 10p per day for fortnightly loans and higher amounts for shorter loan periods. Check the due date stamped in the item. The majority of fine money is put towards the current Library charities.

Renewals and reservations

It is possible to renew items on or before the due date. You may renew most items once without the need to return them to the Library. (You may ask Library staff to renew loans for you or do this yourself online, via the catalogue.) After one renewal, all items which you would like renewed should be brought to the Library for reissue and new due date stamping.

If an item that you require is on loan, it is possible to reserve it. You may do this yourself through the Library catalogue, or OPAC, or ask a member of Library staff for help. You will be emailed as soon as the item is available and you will have three days in which to collect it.

Location of items

The classification sequence begins in Greene with 000 and continues through Scott, Brock, entrance gallery and finishes in John Sargeaunt at 999. Note the following anomalies to the sequence:

Other media

It is possible to view Library DVDs and CD-ROMs and to listen to audio CDs with Library equipment. You may not use Library equipment to listen to your own material unless this has been agreed to beforehand. Please let us know what you wish to do.

Photocopying

This takes place in Milne. If you have your old Library card this still works. Please note that when recharging your card, a minimum of £1 is required; this can be in the form of a chit or cash. We do not take credit! For students enrolled from 2006/07 onwards a cash card can be borrowed from the issue desk. Charges are posted by the photocopier (5p per black-and-white copy, 50p per colour copy).

Prep

During Prep the Library is for silent work only, but work-related discussion may take place in Brock or Milne. It is possible to leave the Library in the break between 8.00 and 8.05pm; otherwise you are expected to stay in the Library until Big Ben strikes 9.00pm. This rule applies to everyone who uses the Library during Prep. No items may be borrowed at this time and any items returned in this period will be registered as having been returned the next day.
